Part 1I think this photo is the best of this set because if the detail it captures in the leaf if you look up close. The use of back lighting in the image also makes the leave semi-translucent which is an effect I haven't played with before. The most challenging aspect of this assignment was finding images online and picking elements to try to emulate without outright copying the original photo. I ended up choosing one or two things from each photo, like composition, and focused on that. In the future, I will definitely be looking for broader scenes rather than only subject-based, as I saw that Ben Hicks had many landscape shots that captured the beauty of the whole, rather than of one subject like I often do. Part 2Hi Kaitlyn,
I think you did a great job emulating Friedlander's shot! The extra details in your of the raindrops really bring something else to the photo as well, even if they're not the subject. It seems Friedlander's photo may also be in black and white, which could create a cool effect in yours with negating the light blue sky in the background! I also enjoy your choice of composition to keep some of the window frame in shot, and with the texture of the trees you mentioned, I almost get an eerie feeling from it with how the branches are curling. https://kaitlyndart180.weebly.com/blog/emulating-a-professional-photographer

Part 1Berenice Abbott's critical compositional choices to both document and convey her thoughts is something that will inspire my future photographic work. While composition is important on a basic photographic level, she showed that it can be used carefully to subtly influence the viewers' interpretations of your work and convey what the photographer thinks of the scene. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQlbfckTaUc&feature=youtu.be Part 2Hi Tyler,
I really enjoyed your presentation! It gave a pretty complete picture of Gaskell's style and her Alice in Wonderland set, and your interpretations were interesting to think about as well. I mostly got an eerie feeling from most of the photos, and I think the fact that most of them are untitled lends itself to that and gives the viewer more interpretive liberty. I would've liked to see more of Gaskell's other works as a comparison to see how she thought of other subjects too, especially given the controversy surrounding some of the works you showed. The bright yellow flowers provide a nice contrast to the red berries and green leaves, and there is a lot of detail seen in the foreground with individual petals and berries. The most challenging aspect of this assignment for me was critically examining the photos I looked at rather than just saying things like "that's a cool image" or "that's pretty." Really thinking about how each image portrayed what the photographer was thinking and the meaning behind it was tough for me. In the future, I will think more about each category of images we looked at for this challenge and see how I can capture the intent in each one, as well as the space in between categories. Part 2Hi Travis,
Great photo! When I first looked at it, I thought it was ocean waves cascading to the right before I read your description, but I can also see the deer you're describing. It really captures the wonder and diversity within the clouds and your choice to shoot it rotated allowed more of the sky to be captured rather than the ground. I think if you changed the framing of the photo so the "deer" wasn't in the center it could result in more interpretation, since currently your eye is drawn to it once you notice it. https://travismcphoto.weebly.com/blog/critiquing-photo-challenge Part 1This photo showing the complementary colors of red and green is my best photo of the challenge. I think attention is immediately drawn to the red berries since they really pop out of the background, especially with the darker green leaves providing nice contrast with the brighter red. The most challenging aspect of this assignment for me was photographic natural light. It was difficult finding examples in nature for different types of lighting since my daily schedule locked me into one time-slot of sunlight, so I resorted to using lighting inside. In the future, the main thing I will work towards for taking better images is branching out of my comfort zone, schedule, and house to find subjects that interest me and so it doesn't get stale. Part 2Hi Susan,
This is a wonderfully scenic photo you took! I especially like the vanishing point created by the creek beds, it really draws your eyes to the distance. The colors you photographed are also really vibrant, the blue sky and leaves especially! Although it is a great nature pic, I think the framing is well suited to having a subject or point of interest just beyond the creek. Also, the reflections off the cars in the background would be something to consider, but there's not much you can do about that. I can really feel that this place would be a great spot to relax, as you said! https://susanrosemiller.weebly.com/blog/dozen-photo-challenge |
